What is Emirates ID and what does it consists of?

Emirates ID is a must for all UAE residents as part of their residency requirement which is issued by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship. Emirates ID serves as an identification purpose in all the Government departments which is used to get government services, to vote in the election of the Federal National Council.

Emirates ID can be used by UAE citizens as a travel document to travel within the GCC Banks and Finance Companies have made it a mandatory requirement to process applications for credit purposes. Emirates ID is a requirement everywhere these days.

It is a legal requirement for all UAE citizens and residents to apply for one and carry it with them at all times. It can be used as a document to pass immigration through the eGates and smart gates at several airports in the UAE.

Emirates ID consists of below features the highest level of accuracy and security:

  • Smart card
  • Public key infrastructure (Digital signature and authentication certificates)
  • Fingerprint biometric
  • 15 digit identification number

Electronic Chip (personal data encrypted which is readable editable and writable by the authorized authorities only.

How to apply for a new Emirates ID ?

Below are the simple steps to follow while applying for a new Emirates ID

Step 1: Emirates ID Application:

In order to apply for the Emirates ID, Applicants can visit the authorized typing centers or they can also get the eForm through the online form available on the website of Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (FAIC)

Step 2: SMS

After submitting the form applicants will receive the SMS through the mobile number registered in the Form mentioning the date and time, and the registration center to need to visit to complete the procedure.

Step 3: Registration Center

After receiving the SMS, you need to visit the registration center mentioned to capture the fingerprint biometric with the below documents:

For UAE Nationals

  • Emirates ID Applicaiton
  • Family Book
  • Valid Passport

For Expatriate Residents:

  • Emirates ID Application
  • Visa or Entry Permit copy
  • Valid Passport

Step 4: Fees

The total fees required to issue the ID card are based on the service channel you choose to get the Emirates ID:

As per the fees published by FAIC are as follows;

  • For one year : AED 100
  • For two years: AED 200
  • For three years: AED 300
  • Service Fees AED 40
  • For Urgent services AED 150
  • Printing Office Fees AED 30

If you wish to apply for Emirate ID through the happiness center, the fees are as follows:

  • For one year : AED 290
  • For two years: AED 390
  • For three years: AED 490

If you wish apply the emirates ID through e-form or smart application , the fees are as follows:

  • For one year : AED 140
  • For two years: AED 240
  • For three years: AED 340

If you wish to apply the Emirates ID through the typing centres, the fees are as follows:

  • For one year : AED 170
  • For two years: AED 270
  • For three years: AED 370

If you wish to apply the emirates Id through Amer services (Dubai), the fees are as follows:

  • For one year : AED 195
  • For two years: AED 295
  • For three years: AED 395

Step 5: Tracking the Emirates ID application status

However, you need to have the below details handy to check the status of your Emirates ID Card.

  • Application Number (PRAN) or
  • ID Number (15 digits in front of the card) (in case of renewal)

Step 6: Delivery and Collection

After the completion of the employment visa procedure your Emirates ID will be sent to the local post office for which you will be notified in advance via phone SMS.

How to Renew your Emirates ID?

You will receive a notification via SMS requesting you to renew your ID card by Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (FAIC).

You have 30 days to renew an expired ID from the date of expiry. If you have not renewed your emirates ID you will have to pay AED AED 20 as late fines per day with a maximum of AED 1000.

UAE residence visa holders can only apply for renewal when their residence visa is renewed or reissued. However, UAE nationals can apply for renewal of Emirates ID between six and one month before the expiry date.

To register your details please visit to the Amer centre or the typing centre and follow the same as new emirates ID application . You might need to visit one of FAIC’s service centres or preventive medical centres to provide your biometric details only if required during the renewal process.

Your user name is the email address you chose.

You need to provide your UAE phone number to which an OTP will be sent for verification.

After this, an email with a randomly created password will be sent to the registered email address.

Use this password to log in to your account and don’t forget to change the password to something that you can remember easily.

  • Step 1: Login into Emirates ID services website
  • Step 2: Click on Renew your ID Card
  • Step 3: Enter in your details accurately (name, numbers, expiry dates etc)Enter IDN number is the one on your card itself, while UID or Unified ID number is on your visa page in the passport. While entering each of these numbers, spaces or hyphens will appear automatically
  • Step 4: Enter the residency file number in your visa page as well. While entering this, the format in the form requires you to put in a zero that is not there in your number – like this xxx-xxxx-0-xxxxxxx. Count out the digits to make sure you’re entering this correctly.
  • Step 5: While giving your name details, if you don’t have a family name, your last name becomes your family name. The family name is a required field, so this makes sure your name appears as it should.

You can save your application to come back to it later. After the first time you hit ‘Save’, you will get a unique application number which can then be used as reference for all the queries you have.

In case you made a mistake or an error and submitted, immediately call 600530003 and let them know. They will return the application to you in 24 hours to enable updates or changes for free. Note: Once your card is issued, changes become harder and more expensive. In case of any doubt at any point, call 600530003 and talk to the customer representative. Make sure each required field is completed correctly.

  • Step 6: Submit and print/save

Once you submit, an online payment portal opens up. After payment, your application is on its way to the ICA (Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship).

  • Step 7: Print out the application and save a soft copy as well.

In some companies, family visas are taken care by the HR department. In this case you may also submit your application form, passport copy, Emirates ID copy, insurance card copy, medical report, and two passport photos to your HR team or PRO.

The EIDA procedure requires detailed sponsor information as well, so this is best done through the company than by the employee.

In case, you are asked to do this on your own, call 600530003 before heading out. Collect all required sponsor documents or data beforehand and submit those along with your documents at an EIDA office close to you.


Once approved and submitted, your Emirates ID will become available for collection at a post office of your choice or your company’s post box (if that’s what you mentioned in the application). You will be notified by SMS when the card is ready for collection.

How to Check Your Emirates ID Status?

You can check your Emirates ID status in two methods:

  1. Through ICA Website

2. Through Voice Call

Below are the steps followed in case if you wish to find the status through ICA Website:

  • Step 1: Visit the UAE ICA Website https://ica.gov.ae/Opens in a new tab.
  • Step 2: Choose English Language to use the Portal in English
  • Step 3: Click on ” Check Emirates ID Status” from the ICA Portal
  • Step 4: Enter your PRAN (application number) or IDN number in the slot and click on Check

The PRAN number is available on your Emirates ID application form, whereas the IDN number is an actual Emirates ID card number.

You can also use the on-screen Application History Log to view a complete history of Emirates ID application such as Date of application submission, date of information verification, date of card printed, date of card sent to post office etc.

Below are the steps followed in case if you wish to find the status through Voice Call

  • Step 1: Dial 600 522 222 on any mobile phone press 3 for Emirates ID
  • Step 2: You will be asked to verify yourself and provide your Emirates iD or the application number
  • Step 3: Customer center will provide you the details you have requested for.

What do you do if you lose your Emirates ID or if it is stolen or damaged?

If your emirates id is lost or stolen or damaged please follow the below steps for applying for replacement card from ICA :

Step 1: Report the Loss, damage of Emirates ID

Report the incident nearest ICA Customer Happiness Centre for the deactivation of the stolen, lost card.

Step 2: Confirmation from ICA

Get the ID number confirmation from ICA or request for the lost ID if you do not have a copy of the same. Take the old card in case if you are card is damaged.

Step 3: Carry Alternative ID

Always remember to carry your identification to prove your identity. (family book, valid passport with residence stamp, original birth certificate of the child in case the lost ID belongs to a child under 15 with coloured passport photo against a white background)

Step 4: Apply for Replacement Card

Fill the application for the replacement of the card at the ICA Customer Happiness Centres or you may fill it through the eForm on the ICA website or the ICA UAE app available on iTunes and Google Play and request a replacement of Emirates ID card.

Step 5: Pay the Fees

Pay the fees AED 300 for replacement. If you are applying through typing centre you may have to pay an additional AED 70 and if you are applying online you may have to pay an additional amount of AED 40.

Step 6: Collect Your Emirates ID

Once approved and submitted, your Emirates ID will be available for collection at a post office of your choice or your company’s post box (if that’s what you mentioned in the application).

You will be notified by SMS when the card is ready for collection. The ID card will be issued within 48 hours from the time of submitting the replacement application. If you applied for the express service, you will receive the ID card within 24 hours from the time you submit the replacement application.

How to cancel your Emirates ID?

Your emirates ID is linked to your UAE residence visa. Once your residence visa is canceled then automatically your Emirates ID gets canceled in the system.

Your Emirates ID may show a longer validity but if you try to use, you will not be able to.
