Visa Renewal of Residence Visa for Dependents (Spouse or Child)

Residence visas are generally valid for two years. Application for renewing visa should be started before the expiration of old visa. There is a 30 days grace period once the residence visa expires. However it is advisable to start the procedure in advance. The procedure would be same as when you apply for the new visa.

The documents required for visa renewal for wife

  1. Valid Original Passports of wife
  2. Valid Original Passport of sponsor with visa page.
  3. Original Labour Card or ID (if government/semi-government or Free Zone Staff)
  4. One Recent photograph (passport size with white background) of wife
  5. Original Labour contract ( for private company staff) or salary certificate (Arabic) for government/semi-government or Free Zone Staff.
  6. Original Medical Test Report from authorized medical Center.
  7. Copy of Health Insurance Card.
  8. Copy of Emirates ID Card or receipt/application form stamped the ID Authority.
  9. Tenancy Contract (accommodation rental agreement). It has to be attested through EjariOpens in a new tab. online system of Real Estate Regulatory Agency (RERA). In case of Abu Dhabi Visa your Tenancy contract with a stamp from Baladiya (Municipality) to be provided at the time of stamping.

NOTE: If you are renewing the visa of daughter older than 18 years, you need to submit the confirmation letter in Arabic that she is still not married. And Parent (Sponsor) has to sign on the letter. The residence visa are valid for one, two or three years depending on the contract of the family sponsor. It is the Sponsor’s responsibility to renew your residence visa before it expires. A renewed visa will let you continue living legally in the UAE without incurring fines or facing legal consequences for the same. The relevant General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) allows residents a grace period of 30 days to stay in the UAE after their visas expire. You have the time limit to renew your expired residence visa 30 days from the date of expiry. During the grace period of 30 days you will not incur any fines.

If they overstay after the grace period, they will be fined with

  • AED 125 for the first day
  • AED 25 for each subsequent day.
  • AED 50 per day after six months of overstaying
  • AED 100 per day after one year of overstaying

In case of an emergency situation ( in case of travelling) where there is a need to renew the visa few months earlier (one to six months) you must first take special permission and approval from the relevant General Directorate of Residency and Foreigner’s Affairs in the emirate that issued your visa.

Visa Renewal Process:

Most of the people prefer to go to typing centre for this process:

  1. Step 1: Visit the nearest authorised typing centre or Amer centre and Fill up the visa renewal application form
  2. Step 2: Get your medical test done based on the emirate that has issued your visa
  3. Step 3 : Apply for Emirates ID (Federal Authority for identity and Citizenship (FAIC) will send you a notification via SMS requesting you to renew your ID card. You will need to submit your renewal application in person at an accredited typing centre or online via FAIC website
  4. Step 4: Get the health insurance done which is mandatory in Dubai and Abu Dhabi
  5. Step 5: Visit the typing centre or GDRFA centre to complete the renewal application with all the above mentioned required documents.
  6. Step 6: Once the application for stamping visa has been submitted you will need to pay an additional charges for Empost in case if you wish you collect the passport through courier.

However, please note you can also complete the application online in English or Arabic from the comfort of your home or office.

How can you renew your family residence visa (Wife and Child) online in UAE?

In the announcement, made on their social media channels, ICA mentioned that the renewal application can be easily completed through the website www.ica.gov.aeOpens in a new tab. or the smartphone application ‘ICA UAE’.

If you are a private sector employee or an employee in a free zone, and are applying to renew your family’s residence visa, these are the documents you need to upload:

  • A recent colour photograph of the sponsored person with a white background.
  • Passport copy
  • Certificate of medical fitness approved by competent authorities for those over 18 years old.
  • Emirates ID application receipt.
  • Accommodation lease (attested) or accommodation ownership by the sponsor.
  • latest utility bill
  • a copy of the husband’s/wife’s employment contract or company contract for investors
  • a salary certificate from the employer stating the employee’s monthly salary
  • A copy of the sponsor’s passport with valid residency.
  • Medical Insurance
  • a legalised marriage certificate

How to register?

  • Visit the website : https://www.ica.gov.ae/Opens in a new tab.
  • Register and create an account using UAE PASS or log in to smart services in case of prior registration.
  • Choose the Residence Permit Renewal service.
  • Submit the application, review and update the retrieved data, and pay fees.
  • Submit an application to renew your ID card.
  • Hand in the passport to the approved delivery company.
  • Your passport will be labelled with the Residency Permit sticker and then delivered to you through the approved delivery company.

Please make sure the information you provide is valid and accurate, the ID number and expiry date are correctly entered before paying the fees to avoid delays in processing of your application.

The data you enter will be reviewed and validated by ICA.

The normal processing time for the renewal of residency permit takes 48 hours as mentioned in the website.
